PL 3.06Table Setting and Serving
The child sets a place at the table using a placemat outline, then serves food and drink to others.
Presentation

Invite the child to a table. Lay the outlined placemat flat.

Place the plate on its outline. Place the fork on the left and the spoon on the right, each on its outline.

Fold the napkin in half and lay it on its outline. Place the cup at the top right.

Point to each outline and object; matching each shape is the point of interest.

Sit down and show how to receive food: a partner carries the serving plate and offers it.

Stand and show serving: carry the pitcher, stand to the right of the seated person, ask: 'Would you like some water?' and pour to the line.

Show clearing: carry each item to the dish-washing area, fold the napkin into the laundry basket.

Invite the child to set a place, then to serve a partner.
Extensions, easiest to hardest
- Set a place on a plain placemat without outlines
- Set a table for four at snack or lunch
- Serve snack to a small group, offering to each person in turn
- Arrange a small flower vase as the table centerpiece
Control of error
The outlines on the placemat show where each object belongs; an empty outline or an extra object is visible.
