Presentation

  1. 1

Invite the child in the morning. Wash hands and put on aprons.

  2. 2

Read the snack card together: for example, "Take 3 crackers and 2 apple slices."

  3. 3

Wash the fruit or vegetables in a basin and dry them.

  4. 4

Cut the food into pieces as in banana slicing, and arrange them on the serving plate in rows.

  5. 5

Count with the child whether there are enough pieces for the number of children.

  6. 6

Set up the snack table: placemat, plate, cup, napkin for two seats.

  7. 7

Place the serving plate and pitcher on the snack table with the snack card.

  8. 8

Show how to check and refill the plate during the morning, and clean up at the end.

Extensions, easiest to hardest

  1. Prepare a snack with two ingredients (cracker with spread and cucumber)
  2. Make a snack card with drawings of how many to take
  3. Prepare snack for a celebration or visitors

Control of error

Running out of snack before everyone has eaten shows the count or portions were not right.

Ready to move on when the child…

  • Prepares the snack from start to finish without help
  • Checks and refills the snack plate during the morning
  • Cleans the snack area at the end of the work cycle

Guide note

Keep an allergy list posted where only adults read it, and check it before any shared food work.

Try “pink tower”, “tummy”, “diaper”, “grace and courtesy”, or “October”.
