SE 3.02Geometric Cabinet: Drawers
The child works through the six drawers of the Geometric Cabinet, matching insets to frames and learning the names of shapes.
Presentation

Start with the drawer of circles (same shape, different sizes). Carry the drawer to the table.

Remove each inset by its knob, trace the frame, trace the inset, and set it on the table.

Replace the insets in any order, looking and comparing before each try.

Present the rectangles drawer next, then the triangles, polygons, quadrilaterals, and curved figures on later days.

Give three-period lessons for the shape names in each drawer, three names at a time.

Return the drawer to the cabinet.
Extensions, easiest to hardest
- Mix insets from two drawers and replace them.
- Grade the circles by size in a line on the table.
- Replace insets with eyes closed.
- Bring the matching inset from across the room.
- Sort pictures or objects by shape.
Control of error
Each inset fits only its own frame.
Ready to move on when the child…
- Completes each drawer independently
- Names the shapes in the drawers presented
- Traces with two fingers without skipping parts of the edge
Guide note
Children often enjoy naming shapes more than any other vocabulary; offer names only after the child has worked with the drawer.
