The child grades and stacks graded insets of a square, circle, and triangle so each smaller shape sits on the one larger.

Presentation

Bring the square set to the table.

Remove each inset and place them at random.
- 3
Choose the largest and place it in the frame, then find the next largest each time and place it on top, centered.

Look down from above to see the even border around each square.
- 5
Remove the insets and grade them in a line on the table.
- 6
Present the circle and triangle on later days.
Extensions, easiest to hardest
- Stack the insets starting from the smallest and build outward in a line.
- Combine two shapes: place the circle insets on the square insets to see which sizes match.
- Trace each inset on paper to make a concentric design.
Control of error
A stack built out of order shows an uneven border, or a larger inset covers a smaller one below it so the smaller one cannot be seen.
