CU 3.06Introduction to Simple Machines
The child uses a ramp, a lever, a wheel and axle, and a pulley to see how simple machines make pushing, pulling, and lifting easier.
Presentation

Lift the weighted box straight up. Say: 'That took a big push up.'

Set the board on blocks to make a ramp. Push the box up the ramp: 'This ramp makes it easier. A ramp is a simple machine.'

Roll a car down a low ramp and a higher ramp. Compare how far it goes.

Set the ruler over the block. Place a small object on one end and press the other end: 'This is a lever.'

Show the pulley: pull the string down to lift the bucket up.

Show the wagon wheels and axle and pull the box in the wagon compared with dragging it.

Match the picture cards of everyday machines to each simple machine.
Extensions, easiest to hardest
- Change the ramp height and measure how far a car rolls
- Move the block under the lever and compare how hard it is to lift
- Find simple machines on the playground
- Build a machine with blocks and string and explain what it does
Control of error
The result of each test is visible: the object moves or lifts more easily, or it does not. A control card shows the correct matches for everyday machine pictures.
