Presentation

  1. 1

Invite the child, show where the block is kept, and carry it to the table with both hands, one at each end.

  2. 2

Sit with the child on your left (if right-handed) and place the block in front of you with the largest cylinder on the left.

  3. 3

Hold the first knob with thumb, index, and middle finger; lift the cylinder slowly straight up and set it on the table in front of the block.

  4. 4

Remove each cylinder the same way, left to right, placing them in random order across the table.

  5. 5

Pick up one cylinder, look at it and then along the holes, and lower it into a hole. If it does not fit, lift it out and try another hole.

  6. 6

Continue until every cylinder is back in the block, moving slowly so the child can see each choice.

  7. 7

Run your fingers across the tops of the cylinders to show they are level with the block.

  8. 8

Offer the child a turn, then show how to return the block to the shelf.

Extensions, easiest to hardest

  1. Remove the cylinders and place them in a line on the table in graded order before replacing them.
  2. Remove all cylinders, mix them, and replace them in any order.
  3. Replace the cylinders with eyes closed or blindfolded, feeling each hole with the fingers first.
  4. Bring the cylinders from across the room one at a time, remembering which hole is empty.

Control of error

Each cylinder fits only one hole. A cylinder placed in a hole that is too large sinks and wobbles; if a hole is misused, the last cylinder will not fit into the last empty hole.

Ready to move on when the child…

  • Removes and replaces all ten cylinders using the three-finger grip without dropping them
  • Corrects a mismatch without adult help
  • Returns all cylinders with few trial-and-error attempts

Guide note

Present the second block only when this one is done with ease. If the child forces a cylinder, do not correct; re-present another day.

Try “pink tower”, “tummy”, “diaper”, “grace and courtesy”, or “October”.
