PL 1.09Sponging (Sponge Transfer)
The child moves water from one bowl to another with a sponge by soaking and squeezing it.
Presentation

Invite the child and carry the tray to the table, water on the left.

Put the sponge in the water and let it soak. Point out that it takes up the water.

Lift it and hold it over the left bowl for a moment so drips fall back in.

Move it over the right bowl and squeeze it with the whole hand. Watching the water come out is the point of interest.

Repeat until the left bowl is empty.

Squeeze the sponge out, wipe any drips on the tray with the sponge, then dry the tray with the cloth.

Invite the child to move the water back.

Empty the water where the class empties water (a bucket or sink) and return the tray.
Extensions, easiest to hardest
- Use a smaller sponge and a smaller bowl
- Wipe up a small spill of water on the table, then on the floor
- Move water with a sponge to a line marked on the inside of the second bowl
Control of error
Drips on the tray show the sponge was not held over the bowl long enough or was squeezed over the wrong place.
Ready to move on when the child…
- Moves all the water with only a few drips
- Wrings the sponge out fully
- Wipes up spills in the room with a sponge without being reminded
