Presentation

  1. 1

Invite a small group (2–3 children). Wash hands and put on aprons.

  2. 2

Lay out the recipe card. Point to the first picture and read it together.

  3. 3

Scoop flour into the measuring cup with a spoon, then level the top with the back of a butter knife. Leveling the cup is the difficulty isolated here.

  4. 4

Pour it into the bowl. Point to the next picture and continue, one child measuring each ingredient.

  5. 5

Crack the egg into a small separate bowl first, then add it to the mix.

  6. 6

Stir with the wooden spoon until no dry flour is visible.

  7. 7

Spoon batter into the liners until each is half full. An adult puts the tin in the oven and sets a timer the children can see.

  8. 8

While it bakes, wash the dishes. When cool, serve the muffins to the class.

Extensions, easiest to hardest

  1. Measure half and quarter cups
  2. Double the recipe for the whole class
  3. Knead and shape bread dough
  4. An older child reads the recipe card to a younger child

Control of error

The picture recipe: each step has a picture; the result (too dry, too wet) shows if a measurement was wrong.

Ready to move on when the child…

  • Measures level cups and spoons
  • Follows the picture recipe in order without skipping a step
  • Takes part in the cleanup without reminders

Guide note

Only adults use the oven. Check allergies (egg, wheat, dairy) before baking.

Try “pink tower”, “tummy”, “diaper”, “grace and courtesy”, or “October”.
