Invite the child. Put on an apron. Carry the tray to a table and lay the mat.

Open the polish jar and place the lid upside down on the tray.

Dip the applicator into the polish once. Show how little is needed; this measured amount is the difficulty isolated.

Rub the polish onto the object in small circles until the whole surface is covered.

Close the jar.

Take the buffing cloth and rub in small circles until the surface shines. Seeing the shine appear is the point of interest.

Put the used cloths in the laundry basket and set out clean ones. Return the tray and the object to their places.

Invite the child to polish an object.

Dull or streaked areas show where polish was not buffed; smudges on the mat show too much polish.

Use only non-toxic polishes. Store polish on the tray, not in a place children can reach without the tray.
