Opening and Closing Containers

Invite the child and carry the basket to a table.

Take out one container and place it in front of you. Hold the jar with your non-dominant hand.

Turn the lid slowly to the left with your dominant hand until it comes off. Show the turning slowly; this wrist turn is the difficulty isolated in this work.

Place the lid on the table beside the jar, flat side down.

Pick up the lid, place it on the jar, and turn it to the right until it stops.

Return the container to the basket. Take out the next one and show its closure in the same slow way.

After two or three, invite the child to open and close the rest.

When finished, check that each lid is closed, and return the basket to the shelf.

Open all containers, mix the lids, then find the lid that fits each one
Add containers with smaller or stiffer lids (nut and bolt, small padlock with key)
Rotate new containers into the basket each few weeks

A lid that does not fit will not close; a screw lid that is not turned straight will not tighten.
