PL 4.05Brushing Hair
The child brushes their own hair in front of a mirror using their own brush, then cleans the brush.
Presentation

Invite the child to the mirror with their own brush.

Look in the mirror and point to where hair is tangled or messy.

Hold the brush by the handle. Start at the top of your head and brush down to the ends in slow strokes.

Work around the head: front, sides, then back. Show how to hold a tangle at the base with the other hand while brushing it out gently.

Look in the mirror again. Seeing the change is the point of interest.

Pull loose hairs out of the brush and put them in the trash.

Put the brush back in its labeled place.

Invite the child to brush their own hair.
Extensions, easiest to hardest
- Put hair in a clip or band
- Braid three strands of yarn on a braiding board, then a doll's hair
- Wash and dry combs as part of care of the environment
Control of error
The mirror shows where the hair is still messy.
Ready to move on when the child…
- Brushes all sections of the head
- Checks the mirror and fixes missed areas
- Cleans the brush and returns it to its place
Guide note
Use individual brushes only; never share, to prevent lice. Hair textures differ greatly; a wide-tooth comb or pick may suit a child better than a brush.
