Presentation

  1. 1

Invite the child and carry the bow-tying frame to a table.

  2. 2

Untie each bow from top to bottom by pulling one loose end. Open the flaps.

  3. 3

Close the flaps. At the top pair, cross the ribbons, tuck one under, and pull both ends to make a knot.

  4. 4

Make a loop with the left ribbon and hold it. Wrap the right ribbon around the loop and push it through the hole to make a second loop. This step is the difficulty isolated here; show it slowly twice.

  5. 5

Pull both loops outward to tighten the bow. Continue down the frame.

  6. 6

Invite the child to try, one bow at a time.

  7. 7

On other days, present lacing (crisscross from bottom to top through each pair of eyelets) and the safety-pin frame (open the pin away from the body, push the point through both layers, close it into the clasp).

Extensions, easiest to hardest

  1. Tie a bow on an apron tie in front of the body
  2. Tie their own shoelaces
  3. Tie a bow behind their back (apron) without looking

Control of error

The two-colored ribbons show which end went where; a bow that is not tight comes undone when pulled.

Ready to move on when the child…

  • Ties bows down the whole frame
  • Laces the lacing frame crisscross without skipping eyelets
  • Ties own shoelaces

Guide note

Safety pins: present one-to-one and keep the frame on a shelf for older children.

Try “pink tower”, “tummy”, “diaper”, “grace and courtesy”, or “October”.
