Presentation

  1. 1

Gather a small group around the line. Show the object, for example a small bell.

  2. 2

Say: 'I will try to walk without the bell making a sound.'

  3. 3

Hold the bell by the top, arm straight down at your side.

  4. 4

Walk heel-to-toe around the ellipse slowly. A silent bell is the point of interest.

  5. 5

Sit down and pass the bell to the first child who wants to try.

  6. 6

Children walk one at a time or in a spaced line, each with their own object.

  7. 7

Collect the objects in a basket when finished.

Extensions, easiest to hardest

  1. Carry a flag held upright
  2. Carry a glass of water without spilling
  3. Balance a bean bag on the head
  4. Carry a spoon with a small ball on it

Control of error

The bell rings, the water spills, or the bean bag falls if the child moves too fast or unevenly.

Ready to move on when the child…

  • Walks the whole line with the bell silent
  • Carries a glass of water around the line without spilling
  • Keeps a bean bag balanced on the head for one full circuit

Try “pink tower”, “tummy”, “diaper”, “grace and courtesy”, or “October”.
