Presentation

  1. 1

Gather the group on the line. Put up the silence card or say quietly: "Let us make silence."

  2. 2

Show stillness first: sit with hands in your lap, feet still, eyes closed. Stay silent for about 20 seconds.

  3. 3

Open your eyes and ask what they heard: 'I heard a car outside. I heard a clock.'

  4. 4

Invite the children to make silence together. Close your eyes.

  5. 5

After 30–60 seconds, step quietly to the far side of the room (or out of sight) and whisper one child's name.

  6. 6

That child stands and walks silently to you. Whisper the next name. Hearing their own name in a whisper is the point of interest.

  7. 7

Continue until each child has been called or the group loses the silence. End by thanking the group quietly.

Extensions, easiest to hardest

  1. Lengthen the silence gradually to 2–3 minutes
  2. Children walk to the guide carrying a bell without letting it ring
  3. An older child whispers the names

Control of error

Any sound breaks the silence and the whole group hears it.

Ready to move on when the child…

  • Holds still and silent for at least one minute
  • Walks without a sound when called
  • Waits to be called without calling out or moving

Guide note

Never force silence or use it as a punishment. If the group is not ready, end the game early and try another day.

Try “pink tower”, “tummy”, “diaper”, “grace and courtesy”, or “October”.
