The child helps make classroom rules, votes on a class decision, and learns the symbols of the United States and Utah.

Ask: 'What would happen if there were no rules on the playground?'

Invite children to suggest classroom rules and write them on the chart.

Hold a vote on a simple class choice, such as which book to read. Tally the votes and count.

Show the United States flag: 'This flag is a symbol of our country.'

Show the United States symbol cards and name each.

Show the Utah flag and the beehive: 'The beehive is a symbol of Utah. It stands for hard work.'

Show the other Utah symbol cards and name each.
Extensions, easiest to hardest
- Match symbol pictures to labels with control cards
- Draw the state flag
- Visit or look at photos of the Utah State Capitol
- Discuss what it means to be a good citizen at school
Control of error
Control cards show each symbol with its name; the tally board shows the vote count.
