The child matches small flags on a stand to their countries on the continent puzzle maps, starting with the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Presentation

Invite the child to bring the North America puzzle map and the North America flag stand.

Take out the United States flag. Say: 'This is the flag of the United States, the country where we live.' Point to the United States on the map.

Describe the flag plainly: the colors, stripes, and stars.

Place the flag next to the United States on the map.
- 5
Repeat with the flags of Canada and Mexico.

Give a three-period lesson on the three flags.
- 7
Return the flags to the stand.

On later days add more flags of North America, then flags of the continent currently being studied.
Extensions, easiest to hardest
- Match flag cards to the flags on the stand
- Place flags on the continent puzzle map and check with the control card
- Draw and color flags for a flag booklet
- Find the flags of classmates' family home countries
Control of error
The control card shows each flag with its country name; the country name is also printed under each flag's base.

- Names the United States, Canada, and Mexico flags
- Places at least five flags on the correct countries of one continent
- Handles the small flags and stand carefully
