CU 8.01Process Art: Drawing and Collage
The child uses crayons, colored pencils, oil pastels, and cutting and gluing to create freely, with care routines for each material.
Presentation

Show where the art materials are kept on the shelf.

Take one tool and one sheet of paper to the table.

Draw slowly, showing different kinds of lines: straight, curved, zigzag.

Invite the child to draw freely. Do not provide a model to copy.

Show how to put tools back and write a name on the paper (or ask the adult to).

On another day, present collage: tear paper, apply glue with a glue stick, press pieces down.

Show how to clean up scraps and wipe the table.
Extensions, easiest to hardest
- Use scissors to cut strips and shapes for collage
- Use a glue brush and small glue pot
- Make a collage with natural materials collected outside
- Draw from observation: a plant or a still life
Control of error
The routine itself: materials have a set place on the shelf and the work is finished when the table is clean and tools are returned.
Ready to move on when the child…
- Gets and returns materials independently
- Works for sustained time without prompting
- Uses scissors and glue with control
