The child pairs, then grades, tablets covered with different grades of sandpaper by touch.

Presentation

Wash and dry hands to sensitize the fingertips.

Take out the tablets and place them at random.

Choose a tablet, stroke it lightly with two fingertips, then stroke others until you find one that feels the same.

Place the pair side by side.

Continue until all tablets are paired.

Once pairing is easy, show grading: from roughest to smoothest, using one tablet of each pair.
Extensions, easiest to hardest
- Pair the tablets with eyes closed or blindfolded.
- Grade the tablets blindfolded.
- Bring the matching tablet from across the room by memory of touch.
Control of error
Many sets have matching marks on the back of each pair; the child turns the pair over to check.
