Presentation

  1. 1

Give the child a problem the child has already solved with stamps. Ask: 'Can you solve this on paper first?'

  2. 2

The child writes the problem in columns on squared paper, starting from the units.

  3. 3

When a column reaches ten or more, show how to write the carried ten above the next column.

  4. 4

    The child writes the answer.

  5. 5

The child solves the same problem with the stamps and compares.

  6. 6

Repeat with subtraction, showing how to record an exchange by crossing out and rewriting.

  7. 7

Over time the child checks with the stamps only when unsure.

Extensions, easiest to hardest

  1. Multiplication by one digit on paper, checked with stamps.
  2. Problems with zeros in the larger number.
  3. The child writes problems for a friend and checks the friend's work with the stamps.

Control of error

The stamp solution and the written solution must match; the control booklet confirms.

Ready to move on when the child…

  • Solves four-digit addition with carrying on paper, correctly
  • Records exchanges correctly in subtraction
  • Uses the stamps only to check

Try “pink tower”, “tummy”, “diaper”, “grace and courtesy”, or “October”.
