MA 3.07Skip Counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s
Without the chains, the child counts aloud and writes by 2s, 5s, and 10s to 100, checking with a colored hundred chart.
Presentation

Recall the 10 chain tickets: 10, 20, 30… 100. Say them aloud together.

On a hundred chart, the child colors each number said when counting by 10s.

Point out the single colored column.

Count by 5s together and color each number on a new chart; point out the two colored columns.

Count by 2s and color; point out the striped columns.

The child says each sequence without the chart, then checks by reading the colored chart.

Counting on: the guide says 'Start at 34 and count to 50'; the child counts aloud.
Extensions, easiest to hardest
- Count backward by 10s from 100.
- Start skip counting by 10 from a number that is not a multiple of 10 (3, 13, 23…).
- Write each sequence from memory and check against the control chart.
Control of error
Colored patterns on the chart: 10s make one straight column, 5s make two, 2s make alternating columns; a break in the pattern shows an error. Printed control charts confirm.
