The child places 100 numbered tiles in order on a 10 by 10 grid, working with the sequence 1–100 with no quantity present.

Presentation

Bring the board and tiles to a table. Spread the tiles face up.

Find 1 and place it in the top left square. Find 2 and place it next to it. Continue to 10 along the top row, reading each aloud.

Place 11 below 1: 'Eleven starts the next row.'

The child continues placing tiles in order, row by row, reading each.

When the board is full, the child compares it with the control chart, row by row.

Point out that the right-hand column holds 10, 20, 30, and that every number in a column ends with the same digit.

Return the tiles to the box one row at a time.
Extensions, easiest to hardest
- Sort the tiles into groups of ten (1–10, 11–20…) before placing.
- Guide hands the child a tile; the child places it on an empty board and says the numbers before and after it.
- Fill a blank hundred chart by writing the numerals.
- Name the number ten more or ten less by moving down or up one square.
