LA 5.02Phonetic Reading Cards
The child reads a phonetic word on the front of a card and checks by turning it over to see the picture.

Presentation

Take one card from the basket, word side up.

Read the word by sounding and blending: "/n/ /e/ /t/, net."
- 3
Turn the card over to show the picture of a net. Say, "Yes, net."
- 4
Place the card in a "read" pile.
- 5
Invite the child to read the next card, then check by turning it over.
- 6
Continue until the basket is empty.
Extensions, easiest to hardest
- Reading cards with words containing four or five sounds
- Reading the cards to a friend who checks the pictures
- Timed rereads of a known set (child checks whether they got faster)

Ready to move on when the child…
- Reads a set of cards with only occasional sounding out
- Checks independently and rereads a card when the picture does not match
