SE T3.08Matching Shapes to Outlines
The child places a circle, a square, and a triangle on matching shapes drawn on a card.
Age 2–2½Work 8 of 13 in Size, Color, Shape, Texture, Sound, and Smell
Safety
- Every shape must not fit the small parts test cylinder (1.25 in. × 2.25 in.).
- Sand the corners of the square and triangle smooth and check for splinters.
Presentation

Carry the card and shapes to the table on a tray.

Place the card in front of the child and the shapes in a row above it.

Pick up the circle, run a finger slowly around its edge, and look along the drawn shapes.

Place the circle on the drawn circle so it covers it exactly. Point of interest: no part of the drawing showing around the edge.

Place the square and triangle the same way, naming each: "Circle. Square. Triangle."

Take the shapes off and invite the child.

When the child matches easily, give the second period: "Show me the triangle."
Extensions, easiest to hardest
- Use a card with thin outlines instead of filled shapes
- Add two shapes, such as a rectangle and an oval
- Find objects in the room with the same shape
Control of error
A shape placed on the wrong drawing leaves part of the drawing showing or hangs over its edge.
Ready to move on when the child…
- Places all three shapes on their drawings without help
- Turns the triangle or square to line it up with the drawing
- Points to the named shape when asked
