SE T3.10Matching Fabrics by Touch
The child pairs squares of fabric that feel the same, starting with two very different fabrics.
Age 2–3Work 10 of 13 in Size, Color, Shape, Texture, Sound, and Smell
Safety
- Hem every edge so no threads can be pulled loose and mouthed.
- Wash the fabrics regularly and replace any that fray.
Presentation

Carry the basket to the table and sit beside the child.

Place one of each pair in a column on the left and the others in a column on the right.

Stroke the top square on the left lightly with your fingertips.
- 4
Stroke each square on the right in turn until one feels the same, and place it beside the first. Point of interest: the two squares that feel the same side by side.

Do the same with the other pair, and describe each: "Bumpy. Smooth."

Mix the squares and invite the child to pair them.
Extensions, easiest to hardest
- Three pairs
- Pair the squares with eyes closed
- Find the same fabric in the child's clothing or in the room
Control of error
The fabrics also look different, so a wrong pair can be seen; when working with eyes closed, opening the eyes shows the error.
