Safety

  • Every ball is at least 5 cm (2 in.) across; balls under 1.75 in. (4.4 cm) are banned for children under 3 as a choking hazard (16 C.F.R. 1500.18(a)(17)).
  • No latex balloons, because pieces of burst balloons are a choking hazard.
  • Only soft balls are thrown indoors, in a clear area away from windows and other children's work.

Presentation

  1. 1

Sit on the floor facing the child, about 1 m apart, legs apart to make a space.

  2. 2

Say, 'I am going to roll the ball to you.' Roll it slowly into the space in front of the child.

  3. 3

Wait for the child to push it back. The ball arriving between the legs is the point of interest.

  4. 4

Roll it back and forth, saying 'Your turn. My turn.'

  5. 5

Standing, show throwing: hold the ball in both hands, bring it back over your head, and throw it into the basket 1 m away.

  6. 6

Outdoors, place the ball still on the ground in front of the child's foot. Show swinging one leg and kicking it forward.

  7. 7

Put the balls back in their basket at the end.

Extensions, easiest to hardest

  1. Roll the ball from further away
  2. Throw into a basket from further away
  3. Kick a ball that is rolling slowly toward the child
  4. Play rolling the ball in a small circle of children

Control of error

The ball: it goes to the side or stops short if the push, throw, or kick is off.

Ready to move on when the child…

  • Rolls the ball back to the adult
  • Throws a ball forward in the direction they chose
  • Kicks a still ball forward without falling
  • Waits for the ball to come back before rolling again
