The child compares how people lived long ago and today using paired pictures and objects.
Presentation
- 1
Show two pictures: a horse and wagon and a car. Ask which is from long ago.

Say: 'Long ago people traveled with horses. Now many people travel in cars.'

Place the header cards and sort more pairs together.
- 4
Show a real old object and let the child hold it and guess how it was used.

Show photographs of Utah long ago and ask what is the same and what is different today.

Invite the child to sort the rest of the cards.
Extensions, easiest to hardest
- Interview a grandparent or elder about life when they were a child
- Make a 'then and now' booklet
- Arrange three pictures in order (very long ago, long ago, now)
Control of error
Each card pair is marked on the back with the same symbol, and the then card has a small clock mark.
Ready to move on when the child…
- Sorts pairs correctly
- Explains one difference between past and present
- Asks an elder a question about the past
Guide note
Show that many peoples have lived in Utah over time, including the Native nations who live here today and have lived here for thousands of years. Present history accurately and without stereotypes.
