CU 7.01Peace Table and Peace Rose
Children learn to solve conflicts by taking turns holding the peace rose, saying how they feel and what they need, and agreeing on a solution.
Presentation
- 1
Introduce the peace table to the group at a calm time, not during a conflict.
- 2
Role-play with an assistant: two adults both want the same book.
- 3
The first adult holds the rose and says: 'I feel upset when you take the book. I need a turn.'
- 4
Pass the rose. The second adult says what they feel and need.
- 5
Both suggest solutions and agree on one. They shake hands or say thank you.
- 6
Invite two children to practice with a pretend problem.
- 7
When a real conflict happens, invite the children to the peace table and guide them with the steps. Gradually say less.
Extensions, easiest to hardest
- Match feelings cards to faces
- Children help classmates use the peace table
- Solve conflicts independently without adult help
- Discuss peacemakers from around the world
Control of error
Both children agree on a solution and return to work; if not, the guide steps back in.
Ready to move on when the child…
- Uses the 'I feel ... I need ...' phrase
- Listens without interrupting while the other child holds the rose
- Solves a small conflict without adult help
