Magnetic and Non-Magnetic

Show the magnet: 'This is a magnet. It can pull some things to it.'

Hold the magnet near the paper clip and let it jump to the magnet. Say: 'The magnet pulls the paper clip. It is magnetic.'

Place the paper clip on the magnetic tray.

Hold the magnet near the wooden block. Say: 'The magnet does not pull the block. It is non-magnetic.' Place it on the other tray.

Test each remaining object one at a time.

Invite the child to test and sort.

Look at the magnetic tray together and notice that many of the objects are metal, and that some metal objects (foil, most coins) are not magnetic.

Predict before testing
Test whether a magnet works through paper, cloth, and water
Use two bar magnets to feel them pull together and push apart
Hunt around the classroom for magnetic surfaces with the wand

Guide note

Never use small, strong magnets (neodymium or magnetic balls). If swallowed, they can cause serious injury. Use large wands and keep an inventory of all pieces.
