SE 9.02Sorting Trays: Grains and Seeds
The child sorts a mix of beans, seeds, and grains into separate compartments, first by sight and then by touch alone.

Presentation

Place the tray on the table with the mixture in the center bowl.

Pick up one bean with the pincer grip and place it in a compartment.
- 3
Pick up a different kind and place it in another compartment.
- 4
Continue, placing each kind in its own compartment, slowly and one at a time.

When done, look over each compartment to check that it holds only one kind.
- 6
Pour the contents back into the center bowl for the next child.
Extensions, easiest to hardest
- Sort two very different kinds, then add more kinds and smaller seeds.
- Sort using tweezers or tongs.
- Sort blindfolded, feeling each item.
- Name each kind of grain or seed.
Control of error
Each compartment should hold only one kind; a mixed compartment is visible when the child looks.

Guide note
Choking hazard: do not use this with children who still put objects in their mouths. Use only large beans for younger children.
