Presentation

  1. 1

Invite the child. Wash hands and put on aprons.

  2. 2

Hold the juicer base steady with one hand.

  3. 3

Place one orange half cut-side down on the cone.

  4. 4

Press down and turn the orange back and forth. Watching the juice collect is the point of interest.

  5. 5

Lift the half, put the rind in the bowl, and juice the next half.

  6. 6

Pour the juice from the juicer into the small pitcher, holding back the seeds.

  7. 7

Pour from the pitcher into the glass. Drink or offer it.

  8. 8

Wash the juicer and glass, wipe the table with the sponge, and compost the rinds.

Extensions, easiest to hardest

  1. Make lemonade: juice lemons, add water, stir in a measured spoon of sugar
  2. Juice enough for a small group and serve it
  3. Strain the juice through a small sieve

Control of error

Juice left in the orange shows it was not pressed fully; spills on the table show pouring errors.

Ready to move on when the child…

  • Presses out most of the juice from each half
  • Pours juice into a glass without spilling
  • Cleans up the juicer and table
