PL 7.05Embroidery
The child draws a simple design on fabric in an embroidery hoop and stitches along it with a running stitch, then other stitches.

Invite the child and carry the sewing basket to the table.

Loosen the hoop screw and separate the rings. Lay the fabric over the inner ring and press the outer ring down over it. Tighten the screw. The fabric should be tight like a drum top.

Draw a simple shape on the fabric with the marker (for example, a circle or a letter of the child's name).

Thread the needle and knot the floss.

Come up from the back on the line. Make small, even running stitches along the line. Keeping the stitches the same size is the point of interest.

Tie off on the back at the end of the line.

Show how to change colors: tie off, rethread, start again.

Invite the child to draw a shape and embroider it. Store the unfinished work in the hoop in the child's folder.
Extensions, easiest to hardest
- Use backstitch for a continuous line
- Embroider the child's initials or name
- Use cross-stitch on gingham fabric
- Sew a small pouch or bookmark from two layers of felt
Control of error
Stitches off the drawn line or of different sizes are visible; loose fabric puckers.
