MA 1.04Spindle Boxes
The child counts loose spindles into compartments labeled 0–9, learning that a number is a group of separate units and that zero means none.
Presentation
- 1
Bring the boxes and basket to a table. Have the child read the numerals 1–9 on the boxes.
- 2
At compartment 1, take one spindle, say 'one', and place it in the compartment.
- 3
At 2, count two spindles one at a time into your non-dominant hand: 'one, two'. Tie them, say 'This is two', and place the bundle in compartment 2.
- 4
Have the child continue to 9, counting each group into the hand, tying it, and placing it.
- 5
Point to the 0 compartment: 'This is zero. Zero means none. There are no spindles here.'
- 6
Show the empty basket: 'We used every spindle. None are left.'
- 7
Three-period lesson on zero: 'This is zero'; 'Show me zero', 'Put zero spindles in my hand'; 'How many spindles are in this compartment?'
- 8
Empty the compartments one at a time, untying and counting each bundle back into the basket.
Extensions, easiest to hardest
- The child fills all compartments alone while the guide watches 5–9.
- Guide asks for any number of spindles in the hand, including zero.
- Zero Game (small group): each child draws a folded slip 0–9 and does that many actions (claps, hops); the child with zero stays still and says why.
Control of error
There are exactly 45 spindles (0 + 1 + 2 + … + 9). Spindles left over, or running out before compartment 9, show a miscounted group.
Ready to move on when the child…
- Fills all compartments with no spindles left over or missing
- Says that zero means none and puts nothing in the hand when asked for zero
- Counts each group into the hand before placing it
Guide note
Counting into the hand before placing matters: it makes the child hold the group as one quantity. If the count ends early or late, have the child recount each compartment to find the error rather than moving spindles around to make it fit.
