MA 2.11Dot Game
The child adds several multi-digit numbers by marking dots in category columns on a printed grid and carrying each completed ten to the next column.
Presentation

Write three addends in the margin, for example 2,347, 1,568, and 3,215.

For the first addend, mark dots in each column from the units: 7 dots, 4 dots, 3 dots, 2 dots.

Mark the second and third addends in the same way, continuing in the same columns.

Count the units dots. Draw a line through each full row of ten; there are 2 full rows. Write 2 in the carry space and mark 2 dots in the tens column. Write the 0 left over in the sum space.

Repeat for the tens: 13 dots, 1 carried, 3 written.

Repeat for the hundreds and thousands.

Read the sum, 7,130, and write the full equation.

Control of error
Each row holds exactly ten squares, so a full row is always ten. The sum is checked by solving the same problem with the Stamp Game.

Guide note
Older five- and six-year-olds only. Each problem takes a long time; prepare problems in advance and let the child leave work in progress to finish later.
