PL T2.15Putting On a Coat
The child lays their coat on the floor inside up with the collar at their feet, puts their hands in the sleeves, and flips it over their head to put it on.
Safety
- Remove drawstrings from hoods and neck areas of children's coats.
- Give each child space to swing their arms so they do not hit another child.
Presentation
- 1
Invite the child to the hooks with their coat. Say: 'I will show you a way to put on your coat by yourself.'

Lay the coat on the floor with the inside facing up and the collar next to your feet.

Stand at the collar, facing the coat. Bend down and push both hands into the sleeves.

Lift the coat up and over your head in one movement, keeping your hands in the sleeves; the coat falls onto your back. The coat landing on your back is the point of interest.

Push your hands through to the ends of the sleeves.

Take the coat off, lay it on the floor again, and invite the child to try.

Wait while they try. If the coat is upside down, point to the collar and say: 'The collar goes by your feet.'
Extensions, easiest to hardest
- Lay the coat out without help
- Close the zipper once the adult starts it
- Put on a coat one arm at a time
Control of error
If the coat is laid out upside down or with the outside up, it ends up upside down or inside out after the flip.
