PL T3.01Returning Work to the Shelf
The child puts the pieces of a finished work back in its basket or tray and carries it to its place on the shelf.
Safety
- Shelves are anchored to the wall or low and wide enough that they cannot tip when a child pulls on them.
- Baskets and trays are light and have no loose handles, strings, or cords longer than the child's forearm.
Presentation

When the child stops using a work, sit beside them and say, 'You are finished. Now it goes back.'

Pick up one piece slowly and place it in the basket. Pause. Hand the child the next piece or point to it, and wait for them to put it in.

When all the pieces are in, hold the basket with both hands at the sides and stand up.

Walk slowly to the shelf with the child beside you. Set the basket down in its place so it does not make a sound. The empty space on the shelf filling up is the point of interest.

On later days, carry the basket together, then let the child carry it while you walk beside them.

When the child leaves a work out and walks away, walk to it and say, 'This goes back on the shelf.' Put back the first piece yourself and wait for the child to join in.
Extensions, easiest to hardest
- Return a work with two kinds of pieces (for example, a puzzle and its pieces)
- Return a work to a shelf in another part of the room
- Return a book to the book basket and a chair to the table
- Put a work back without an adult nearby, then choose the next one
Control of error
The empty space on the shelf, or the photo or outline taped there, shows where the work belongs; a piece left on the floor or table is visible when the child walks away.
Ready to move on when the child…
- Puts all the pieces back in the container without adult help
- Carries the work to its own place on the shelf
- Returns a work before taking the next one, most of the time, without a reminder
Guide note
A toddler often puts work back only when the adult starts it with them. That is expected; the adult's own habit of returning things to the same place is what the child copies. Keep few works on the shelf so each has a clear place.
