MV T1.01Movement Mat and Mirror
The infant spends awake time on their back on a firm floor mat beside a low wall mirror, free to move and to see their own movement.
Safety
- The mat is for awake time only; an infant who falls asleep is moved to a crib on their back, following AAP safe sleep guidance and state licensing.
- An adult watches the infant the whole time they are on the mat.
- The mirror is shatterproof acrylic, never glass, and is screwed to the wall so a child cannot pull it forward.
- The mat is firm and flat, with no pillows, positioners, quilts, or soft toys near the infant's face.
- In a group room, non-mobile infants have a protected floor area so crawling and walking children do not step or fall on them.
- Blind cords, electrical cords, and outlets near the mat are out of reach or covered.
Presentation
- 1
Lay the mat on the floor along the mirror. Press on the mirror's corners and edges to check that it is fixed to the wall and has no loose frame.
- 2
Tell the infant what you will do: 'I am going to lay you on the mat.' Lower them onto their back in the middle of the mat, supporting the head until it rests on the mat.
- 3
Place one object: a visual mobile about 20–30 cm above the chest, or a single grasping toy beside one hand. Take away anything else.
- 4
Sit or lie on the floor near the mat, at the infant's level, and stay quiet. Do not sit them up, turn them onto their side, or stand them on their feet; they reach each position by themselves.
- 5
Watch what the infant does: which way they turn the head, how they kick, whether they bring their hands together, and how long they look at the mirror. The mirror showing the infant their own movement is the point of interest.
- 6
If the infant rolls toward the edge, let them roll off onto the floor if the floor around the mat is clear and soft; stay close.
- 7
When the infant shows they are tired or upset (crying, turning away, rubbing the eyes), tell them, 'I am going to pick you up,' then pick them up. If they fall asleep, move them onto their back in a crib.
- 8
As the infant starts to roll and crawl, keep the mat as the starting place and clear more floor space around it.
Extensions, easiest to hardest
- Place one object slightly to the side to invite turning the head and rolling
- Add a pull-up bar along the mirror once the infant crawls (see Pulling Up at the Bar)
- Lay the mat outdoors in the shade on grass, with the same rules
Control of error
None in the material. The mirror shows the infant their own movement; the adult observes which movements appear and when the infant is tired.
Ready to move on when the child…
- Turns the head fully to both sides while lying on the back
- Rolls from back to side, and from back to tummy, without help
- Moves off the mat by rolling, pivoting, or crawling
- Looks at and reaches toward their image in the mirror
Guide note
At home, the mat can go in the living area so the infant can see the family. Montessori sources place a low mirror by the mat; Pikler settings do not use a mirror. Visual mobiles (Munari, Octahedron, Gobbi, Dancers) are in the Sensorial area and hang above this mat.
