Grasping Toys: Rattles and Interlocking Discs

Safety

No toy or part of a toy fits the small parts test cylinder (1.25 in. × 2.25 in.).
Check wooden toys for cracks and splinters before use.
No ribbons, cords, or strings attached to grasping toys.
Mouthed toys are cleaned and sanitized before another child uses them, following state licensing.

Lay the infant on their back on the mat, telling them first.

Hold one toy still at the infant's midline, about 20–25 cm above the chest.

Wait for the infant to reach. When their hand touches the toy, let them close their fingers around it before you let go.

Take your hands away and watch. The sound the toy makes when the infant moves it is the point of interest.

Let the infant shake, mouth, drop, and pick up the toy without taking it back.

On later days, place the toys on the mat beside the infant instead of handing them over.

After use, put mouthed toys aside to be cleaned before another child uses them.

The toy: it makes a sound only when shaken, and it falls if the grip opens.
