Cruising Along Low Furniture

Safety

Anchor shelves and any furniture that could tip to the wall, and check stability before each day.
Pad or remove sharp furniture corners at the infant's head height.
Nothing breakable, hot, or small enough to fit the small parts test cylinder is on the furniture tops.

Push on each piece of furniture from above and pull it toward you to check it does not tip or slide. Anchor any shelf that moves.

Arrange the furniture in a line along a wall, with the pull-up bar at one end.

Place one toy on the far end of a shelf, where the infant can see it.

Sit nearby and let the infant move along the furniture toward the toy. The toy at the far end is the point of interest.

Do not hold both hands above the infant's head to walk them.

When the infant cruises easily, move one piece of furniture so there is a small gap, about one step, between it and the next.

Watch the infant let go of one piece and reach for the next, and later take a step alone.

The furniture and the gap: if the infant lets go before the other hand holds the next piece, they sit down.
