LA T2.04Matching Objects to Similar Pictures
The child matches a real object to a picture of the same kind of object that looks different in color, size, or design.
Safety
- Every object must not fit the small parts test cylinder (1.25 in. × 2.25 in.).
- Check laminated cards for peeling edges and sharp corners; loose laminate film is a choking hazard.
- Use color dots painted or printed on, not stickers a child can peel off and mouth.
Presentation

Lay the cards in a row on the mat and name each: "A cup. A shoe. A brush."

Take out the first object, name it, and hold it next to the card that shows the same kind of thing: "This cup is white. This cup is blue. They are both cups."

Place the object beside its card.

Hand the child the next object and name it.

Wait while the child looks across the pictures. This is the point of interest: the child places the object with the picture of the same kind of thing, even though it looks different.

If the child places it with another card, name both ("That is a shoe. This is a brush.") and hold the object beside its own card.

Put everything back in the basket together.
Extensions, easiest to hardest
- 5–6 objects and pictures
- Pictures that differ more from the object: a drawing instead of a photograph, or a different angle
- Two different pictures for each object
- The child turns over the object and card to check the color dots
Control of error
The adult, at first, because the object and picture do not match exactly. Once the child knows the work, the matching color dots on the object and the back of the card let the child check.

- Matches each object to its similar picture without help
- Uses the same name for an object and a different-looking picture of it
- Names pictures of familiar things in books
- Takes out and returns the work on their own
